Heart failure is a widespread disease, affecting over one million people in Germany. With its frequency of occurrence steadily rising, it is considered the dominant cardiovascular disease in the 21st century. The reduced pumping action of the heart seriously affects the physical ability of the patients and has, therefore, an impact on all areas of life. Additionally, due to its chronic-progredient character, heart failure leads to considerable consumption of resources in the health system. A cure can only be attained in exceptional cases. The Competence Network Heart Failure is an interdisciplinary research project with nationwide participation. In total, over 200 medical doctors and scientists from 30 university clinics, 5 research institutes, 7 heart centers, 17 cardiovascular clinics, numerous doctor’s practices, 4 rehabilitation clinics as well as organisations, associations and industry participate in this cooperation network. The network aims to obtain an additional value for patients, clinicians and scientists by multidimensional connection of these numerous partners. The cooperations are to generate important synergy effects to improve care for patients suffering from heart failure. For the first time, the competence network thus allows the creation of a nationwide forum and a program of action for heart failure patients.
The Competence Network Heart Failure is part of the funding program "Competence Networks in Medicine".
