Congenital heart defects are the most frequent congenital illness. About 6,000 children with heart defects are born in Germany each year. Most of them remain chronically ill throughout their lives. At present, a total of about 300,000 children, adolescents and adults are suffering from heart defects. Medical doctors, researchers, parents associations and patient groups are now working together for the first time in what is called the Competence Network for Congenital Heart Defects. Work is focused on the establishment of a patient database, the National register for patients with congenital heart defects, the development of guidelines for patient care and information and training for doctors and patients. The aim is to encourage the exchange of findings and experience between the science and health care sectors, thereby improving treatment and the patients quality of life.
The competence network for Congenital Heart Defects is part of the funding measure "Competence Networks in Medicine".
