Community Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) requires hospitalization more frequently than myocardial infarction or stroke. Although progress has been made in diagnosis and treatment, the quality of medical care for CAP patients is still unsatisfactory. CAP is a common disease in Germany. Even though the mortality rate went down in recent years, it still ranges between 6 and 8 per cent. This means that one in six deaths is caused by CAP in Germany.
The assignment of CAPNETZ is therefore to join all expertise in community acquired pneumonia. This involves the link of different research groups and levels of patient care. It will promote synergies, collect Germany-specific data and create a national network for combating this widespread disease.
CAPNETZ currently runs eight local clinical centres. About 670 general practitioners, internists, and pulmonary doctors as well as more than 30 hospitals cooperate within these centres. All clinical, microbiological, and genetic data are collected in a central database at Ulm university. Researchers work in clinical projects which aim to improve diagnosis and treatment of CAP. This includes, for example, development of treatment guidelines. Another important focus is the identification and characterization of pathogens. The main goal is to develop, improve and evaluate diagnostic measures and tools and to prevent the spreading of resistance against antibiotics. Moreover, investigator-initiated as well as commercial clinical trials are conducted and organized by CAPNETZ.
The Competence Network Acquired Pneumonia is part of the funding program "Competence Networks in Medicine".
