Four million people in Germany suffer from depression. Although widespread, the disease is often underestimated by the general public, and the distress of the persons affected is played down. Depression is a life-threatening disease due to the large number of depressed persons who commit suicide. In order to address the multiple deficits with regard to diagnosis, treatment and research in the field of depressive disorders the Research Network on Depression and Suicidality connects German research centers and university hospitals as well as general practitioners and the most important institutions in the German health care system. In cooperation with these partners six main projects, each with several subprojects, are realized. The common aim is to remove diagnostic and therapeutic deficits, to inform patients and the public about the illness and to improve the situation of the affected persons.
The Competence Network Depression and Suicidality is part of the funding measure "Competence Networks in Medicine".
