Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease. An obstruction or a disruption of a blood vessel in the brain lead to an acute circulatory disturbance ("ichemic stroke") or to a bleeding ("hemorrhagic stroke"). This results in a lack of oxygen and energy supply and eventually in the death of the affected neuronal tissue. In Germany every year about 250.000 people suffer a stroke, about 75.000 of them die within one month. Most survivors are struck with a permanent  neurological deficit. New perceptions in stroke research raise hope on the one hand to strongly diminish the number of strokes through advanced prophylactic measures and on the other hand to improve considerably the clinical treatment of stroke patients. Besides further development of the scientific bases of stroke research, within the Competence Network Stroke the new perceptions are translated into clinical application and after successful testing will benefit the whole population. The following areas of action shall be improved:

- Risk discovery and prevention
- Acute therapy
- Rehabilitation and secondary prevention

The Competence Network Stroke is part of the funding measure "Competence Networks in Medicine".
