1. Objectives of funding
The federal funding initiative „Research Networks in Pain Research“ aims at strengthening research in the field of chronic pain. The objectives of the measure are to improve the conditions for mechanism based research on the chronification of pain, to facilitate prevention of chronification by early efficient therapy and to promote the development of therapeutic strategies allowing an effective treatment of persistent chronic pain.
The trans-regional networks combine approaches from various disciplines (e.g. neurobiology, neurology, pharmacology, anaesthesiology, social medicine, and biometry) and cover universities, clinics and pain centres. To cope with the fact that patients suffering form chronic pain usually seek help from general practioners and to facilitate transfer of research results from the bench to the bedside, practise based doctors and psychologists are included in the networks as well.
2. State of the funding measure
Federal funding is scheduled for a total period of 6 years. Research Networks for “Back Pain”, “Headache/Migraine” and “Neuropathic Pain” have already been funded for the first 3 year funding phase (2002-2005). The Headache Consortium and the Network on neuropathic pain have passed a positive evaluation and will be funded for three more years (2005 – 2008).
