Due to their frequentness in all age groups, leukemias constitute a major societal challenge and an important expense factor for the health system.
In research, leukemias serve as models for various diseases and have exemplary character in fundamental research and medical care. The Competence Network aims to establish a world-wide leading cooperative leukemia network to improve medical care of the population as well as health research on acute and chronic leukemias.
The network involves all major German study groups currently concerned with leukemia research and health care improvement. With their communication structures, their interdisciplinary cooperation and their area-wide approach with several hundred participants in university clinics, hospitals and doctor’s practices, these groups already form smaller networks to be expanded in the future.
