With about 2.000 children and adolescents affected in Germany each year and approximately 500 death cases cancer is still the cause of death number one after traffic accidents. Over the last 30 years the chances of survival could be dramatically increased from less than 10% to over 70% due to intensified chemotherapy regimes. In order to further improve cure rates innovative and costly new strategies are required. This is were the work of the Competence Network Pediatric Oncology and Hematology sets in: through the bundling of expertise from different medical and scientific areas, the establishment of new communication and cooperation structures, and the realization of multidisciplinary projects, an improvement in diagnostics and therapy should be achieved that further enhances cure rates and the quality of life.

The Competence Network Pediatric Oncology and Hematology is part of the funding measure "Competence Networks in Medicine".
