About 1,3 million people in Germany, including children, are suffering from inflammatory rheumatic diseases. These comprise a diverse group of disorders, characterized by chronic inflammation which leads to damage of joints, spine, connective tissue or even internal organs. Inflammatory rheumatic diseases cause great pain and growing immobility of the patients, eventually resulting in disability and a reduced life expectancy in a substantial amount of cases. By close cooperation of researchers and physicians combined with a national patient register the competence network aims to identify the causes of the diseases, to facilitate their diagnosis and to develop improved treatments. The central goals of the network are to improve health care for the rheumatic patients by accelerating translation of the latest scientific progress into clinical practice and to secure and intensify international competitive rheumatological research in Germany. To this end the leading German research groups and health care facilities in the field of inflammatory rheumatic diseases have joined forces.

The Competence Network Systemic Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases is part of the funding measure “Competence Networks in Medicine”.
